Writer's Guidelines and Agreement

Guidelines
- Before proceeding with a story, please submit a written proposal with approximate word count, as well as a description of the tone of the article. The editor will e-mail approval of the article, as well as the deadline.
- Please follow AP Stylebook for style. If you are unfamiliar with this style, AP handbooks are available at local libraries.
- Refer to Strunk and White Grammar Book; The Little, Brown Handbook or any well-recognize grammar book to clarify grammatical questions.
- Your audience is intelligent, well-educated and over 25.
- Be objective in your writing. You are writing an article to inform, not an editorial opinion.
- The editor will rely upon the author to check facts for accuracy.
- On the front page of your submission, write your full name, Social Security number, e-mail, address, and telephone number; thereafter on successive pages list only your last name in the upper right-hand corner, followed by page numbers Ñ 2 of 5, 3 of 5 and so forth. Please use a series of three pound signs (###) to indicate the end of the copy.
- Text should be typed in size 12, Times New Roman font, double-spaced.
- This is a city magazine so all articles must be local in nature.
- Send submissions as an attachment via email to blythe@spokanecda.com unless other arrangements have been made with the editor.
Agreement
- Upon final submission, the editor has the right to edit any or all text.
- Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine has the right to use the author's article on Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine Web site; the publisher will not compensate the writer for articles published in the magazine that are also used on the Web site. The Web site is a free service to magazine subscribers and part of the service that Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine provides to its readers.
- Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine has the right to use the author's article in promotional material related to publicizing Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine; the publisher will not compensate the writer for any reprints, providing that the published article is for promotional purposes only.
- Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine and all articles and photos are copyrighted. After the author's article has been published, the publisher will pay the author for the edited version.
- Submissions become the property of Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine Before incurring expenses, get prior approval.
- The author agrees that he or she is the sole author, that the work is not libelous and that it does not violate any other copyright.
- Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine is under no obligation to publish the work.
Payment schedule for articles
Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living Magazine will compensate authors as follows for articles published in the magazine:
- Buzz items of any length: $25 each
- Neighborhood profiles (750-900 words): $75
- History articles (1000-1200 words): $100
- Feature articles (2000-2500 words): $250
- Garden stories (1000 words): $100
- Home stories (2000 words): $250
- Artist Profile (900 words): $75
Permanent writers currently cover other columns, but pitches on a variety of topics are always welcome. We are especially looking for great investigative articles. Opinion columns are unpaid.
