May 8: An Evening with David Sedaris. David Sedaris may well be the closest thing the literary world has these days to a rock star. His speaking engagements are now consistently standing-room-only, a far cry from his early days as a housecleaner in New York City. Sedaris made his comic debut recounting his strange-but-true experiences of his job as a Macy's elf clad in green tights, reading his Santa Land Diaries on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. His sardonic wit and incisive social critique have since made him one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which Sedaris slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. He is the author of the bestsellers Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day, both of which became immediate bestsellers. His essays appear regularly in Esquire and The New Yorker.  Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox. 1001 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201.  For more information or tickets, please call (509) 624-1200 or log in to http://www.foxtheaterspokane.com/

MUSIC

April 24: Spokane Symphony SuperPops 6: Wylie Gustafson & Paul Zarziski, The Cowboy Show. In this era of prepackaged superstars - of pale imitations of country music being pushed onto the public by faceless media giants - the music of Wylie & The Wild West is a beacon of truth and honest beauty. By being himself, Wylie Gustafson has become one of the most exciting and endearing acts in contemporary music: Country, Western, Folk or otherwise. Joined by Cowboy Poet Paul Zarzyski, who has been featured at 22 consecutive annual National Cowboy Poetry Gatherings in Elko, NV, and has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s "A Prairie Home Companion", these authentic heroes of song and word will thrill symphony listeners like never before. Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox. 1001 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201.  For more information or tickets, please call (509) 624-1200 or log in to http://www.foxtheaterspokane.com/

The schedule for the Spokane Symphony Classics concert 10, “Entangled in Passion” will include: Richard Wagner’s Venusberg music (Bacchanale), Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor. Strauss’ music is dazzling in his great tone poem, Don Juan, an unqualified success that is both filled with passion and yet is virtuoso in its technical demands. Franck, a Belgian organist is remembered for a handful of works, wrote his Symphony late in life. It is a rare fusion of the cyclical form, common in French music of the time, and the Germanic romantic symphony. Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox. 1001 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201.  For more information or tickets, please call (509) 624-1200 or log in to http://www.foxtheaterspokane.com/

May 9: Spokane String Quartet Mother’s Day Concert. Spokane area native, Archie Chen, now living in Ireland, returns home for this Mother's Day Concert.  As the Irish Times described his playing, "The grand gesture, whether of gorgeously full tone or daring velocity, seems to be at the heart of Chen's approach to romantic repertoire.  The eagerness with which he launched himself into the most daunting of challenges suggests a fiery temperament, and the necessary elements of technique are there to support it." Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox. 1001 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201.  For more information or tickets, please call (509) 624-1200 or log in to http://www.foxtheaterspokane.com/

May 14: The 5 Browns with the Spokane Symphony. Back by popular demand, this dynamic family will be sure to thrill Spokane audiences yet again, as they did in their sold out performance two years ago. The first half will feature the Browns performing a selection of duets and trios with the Spokane Symphony, while the second half will be a repeat of their trademark extravaganza on five pianos. The Browns present themselves as they really are: young adults with a modern look who love fashion, sports, computer games, dancing and all types of music – most of all, classical. And audiences, especially the kids, are blown away when the five perform in concert. When the 5 Browns sit down to perform on their five Steinway grand pianos … their eyes lock … a silent signal passes between them. And in an instant they are transformed, from “regular” kids to musical dynamos. Flawless in precision and steeped in passion, they invariably stun critics and shatter the preconceptions of those who find classical music inscrutable or intimidating. Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox. 1001 W. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99201.  For more information or tickets, please call (509) 624-1200 or log in to http://www.foxtheaterspokane.com/

This is 21st century country music at its best.  For this tour, McGraw will be joined by country and pop-charts juggernauts Lady Antebellum and Love and Theft.
